Potentially banning TikTok is like potentially banning Twitter, nothing of value will be lost, the world will continue to exist

As a military guy, we were told not to use tiktok at work, in any capacity, even on our personal devices. It was suggested to stay out of uniform if we do use it on our own time.

I’m amazed that govt employees were allowed to access TikTok on govt devices at all… the bank I worked for banned access to any social media sites or apps on work devices back in the mid-2010’s. Partially for productivity reasons, but mainly because corporate (and govt) employees are notoriously bad at cybersecurity and will click on any random link or attachment given half a chance!

I agree with you 💯 percent when it comes to officials using social media. These people are supposed to be governing and monitoring for the good of the nation as a whole. What are they doing on a social media app opening their mouths and giving their two cents on crap that has nothing to do with the overall security of the country. Personally I would fire every political group, politicians, or whoever who was too caught on talking about the latest garbage takes and not dealing with the overall nation wide issues at hand.

Here in brazil unfortunately we aren’t so fortunate, TikTok is a cancer here, imagine the worst thing you see in TikTok in the US, and now imagine something 10 times worse, that’s what i’ve seen in our TikTok. Not only gore videos, but things that are waaaaay worse than that. I totally agree with the ban, i’ve never seen any app to make people so dumb like TikTok does.

A lot of studies regarding these short term videos show that they are quite literally the reason why we’re evolving backwards. Apart from an app for messaging between users, I believe EVERY social media like TikTok is useless.

A weird thing I noticed about TikTok. I recently travelled to central asia and all the time I used internet there I would do that through VPN servers back in Canada. It is for privacy reasons, but also to bypass blocked sites and to make sure my services don’t freak out about a shady country. However, somehow TikTok was aware of the country I was in and was suggesting me local content a lot. I checked if app has access to my location – it did not. In fact, it only had notification permissions on my Android.

I wouldn’t say “Possibly affecting politics etc.” I would say they DO. Social media has completely changed the political arena over just the last 15 years. It will only get more pronounced and factionalize people more until they realize the division it creates.

I love how the NSA and FBI were like “China, you can’t spy on Americans, that’s our job, damnit!”

Finally. It’s a good thing too that it is gaining momentum and more people realize the risk it can pose at the national and governmental level. I remember back at the beginning when it was considered to be spyware. Someone with a good grasp of technology could probably make a Tiktok clone but minus the spyware.

Deleted tiktok and you truly feel the “withdrawals” if you use it constantly. But you never realize how much time you lose there until you don’t have it.

The biggest problem with Tik Tok isn’t the surveillance issue, it’s the ability for social manipulation on a mass scale

Tbh I’m surprised most social medias aren’t already banned on Government devices.

Personally, I think for government level devices, ALL social media kind of apps should be banned. But I agree with you– the average citizen like us should just be able to download and use whatever, and assume whatever risk that comes with it. I don’t care if any government spies on me lol. I’ll still post my art and watch look at funny videos and photos on tiktok or pixiv or twitter, etc.

I really hope this will accelerate to a citizen-level to potentially catalyze an enlightenment within my generation. TikTok has set us back a decade single-handedly.

I disagree. I think it would be wise to ban TikTok for civilians, for many reasons. But the main reason is that the overwhelming majority are unaware of the privacy concerns that come with downloading the app. The only way I’d remedy this is if they added an explicit pop up when opening the app, asking you permission for TikTok to know all this information. It would have to be short and brief so people don’t just click accept without reading it. There should also be a 30 second timer on the accept button, so even if the person was intending on ignoring it, they have nothing better to do, in the time they’re waiting, except read the brief list of everything the app wants to know. Even adding all this, the large majority of people using the app are young children. These kids most likely wouldn’t understand the gravity of the risks, by downloading the app. This next point is subjective, but I believe TikTok being banned could benefit the younger generation as a whole. As literally anyone can go viral on TikTok, that also means dumb people spreading misinformation can gain a platform with literally no effort. As a lot of kids are using the app, they’d likely not know any better and take what is being said as truth. There’s also the issue of these “challenges” that spread on TikTok that often end up in someone innocent getting hurt from. I am a firm believer that TikTok is playing the big part in destroying this generation, by having the ability to give anyone a platform no matter how smart or dumb they may be.

I still can’t believe people let tiktok shove themselves down everyone’s throats in like 2018 when they had an ad on every website constantly

We’ve heard it already, but I genuinely hope they do it this time. Nothing other than idiocy will be lost.

When zoomers grow up to where some become law makers and leaders , having a longer attention span and less warped view on life is a must. And banning tik tok and other social medias will absolutely help with that

I’m generally against banning anything. I’d much rather prefer to believe people are smart enough to make their own decisions and realize they are being spied on / manipulated. But then again people who use tik tok have questionable mental capabilities to go to the bathroom by themselves let alone understand they are being manipulated
