I agree that censorship is bad, however, if they are stealing IPs and personal information I’d say the concern is extremely warranted.

Something suspicious that has been bugging me more and more as time goes on:
Here in my city (in Canada) there is a FB group for gigs and part time jobs. Last month there was a post from a local soliciting for English speakers with a Canadian accent to have a recorded conversation with someone over the phone. $80 for two hours of recorded dialogue. Topics included politics, marriage, careers, hobbies, travel, etc. I figured I’d give it a shot and contacted the poster with my number. I got a phone call from a lady with a heavy Chinese accent giving me the info I needed to start. When I asked her about the company she just gave me a brief answer: speech recognition company called Speechocean from Beijing. She would not comment on the purpose of the recordings, so I became hesitant to continue on. I told her I was no longer interested.
While this company may just be a data collection company using the voice data to improve speech recognition software, who really knows what that data could be used by and for. The information is stored in Beijing. People are essentially giving away their unique voice print to an overseas company they know nothing about for $80. I asked the local recruiter on Facebook if he knew the name of the company and what the data would be used for. He said he had no idea, he was just hired to scout people with the accent they needed. Since then, 2 other local recruiters have posted and* find people willing to do this very quickly.
Call it paranoia if you want, but can we at least ask questions before sending off sensitive info that could potentially be used against us?

Edit: typo

Bought a new phone last week of June 2020, TikTok was already downloaded on it. Never opened it, deleted it, still feel like I need to wipe the hard drive to clean it completely.

Turn the tables : post about Tiananmen Square massacre, and the persecution of Hong Kong, the Tibetans and Uigurs. Not to mention Winnie the Pooh…

Ban them based on reciprocity : Western apps, medias, social networks are forbidden in China, do the same to their services. Deny them the influence and revenues.

Soon our internet will be censored like China’s

This will only be the beginning.

The VPN industry is going to love this.

“american data is stored on american servers” means nothing.
1st they could reroute the data to first go to China and have it analysed and then back to american servers.
2nd it could also mean that a copy of all american data is on Chinese servers….

I hate the “The west doesn’t censorship!!” argument in context of China.
The west shouldn’t – but I don’t think China should have the right to the freedoms offered by the west. They shouldn’t be considered a legitimate nation at all – companies within China should be treated as an extension of a rogue state ran by war criminials.

Didn’t Bytedance:

A) Move to Hong Kong from the mainland over privacy concerns
B) After the new laws were passed, announce they were leaving Hong Kong due to the same concerns.

Tad confused here…

LOL how can it be “Capitalistic” and then a dictatorship under the CCP? Ultimately in a dictatorship the individual companies or people do not mean anything as it is the dictatorship that controls it all. So bottom line is there is a national security risk with any China parent company.
