TikTok CEO Shou Chew dives into how the trend-setting video app and cultural phenomenon works — from what distinguishes its algorithm and drives virality to the challenges of content moderation and digital addiction. In a wide-ranging conversation with head of TED Chris Anderson, he tells stories about the TikTok creators he loves and digs into thorny issues like data privacy and government manipulation — as well as speaking personally about his commitment to inspiring creativity and building community.

Gotta give it to Chris. He always walks the line well. He pushes back asks hard questions but good ones as well. But despite his best efforts, he didn’t push back enough. He should have focused more on the differences between the Chinese version, the negative effects of this app on attention spans et cetera.
Everything has it’s pros and cons, it’s up to the individual how they allow those things to impact them.
Shou broke-downed and emphasized the geniusand brilliance of the Interest Graph really well, without really saying the word itself. Such a mad skill.
Love tiktok or not, gotta give it to the CEO for handling Congress with such patience, professionalism and grace.
People make their own decision to use social media, knowing all its risks after all. If you cannot resist the temptation, addiction or bad self esteem, social media works only as a mirror to reflect who you are.
We started exploring the space, but now we’re fighting which country will lead the best social media app with it’s algorithm and shifted all our focus to that part
This is so, so good! This is an excellent example of a CEO. He’s articulate, straight to the point, clear, and knows his company thoroughly in and out
Amazing CEO, so apt and compelling and seemingly transparent. He looks so much responsible and trustworthy to lead a platform like tik tok safely and to success. Wish him all the best, so much to emulate from him.
Shou Chew is an exemplary leader of today. We can say all we want but this gentleman has exhibited professionalism, emotional regulation at the highest degree in all situations we have been shown, integrity and intelligence.
I think we have to be fair that TikTok is an app and in the end it is a business with a mission and vision like all businesses do. While they have responsibility to their customers, the customers must be accountable on how they use the app, too. It’s a collaboration effort between users and the app. If we are civil and morally aware, we would know what to and what not to. TikTok is an app that allows a stage for anyone and everyone regardless of our status, connections. Mr Chew says it, everyone stands a chance to make it so long as you have talent and of course posting regularly.
Just like everything in life, exercise moderation, it will be a safe platform for all.
It’s a collective effort and responsibility for the product and the consumer to maintain a safe environment within any platform. That’s the main core vision towards the mission of understanding oneself and the other providing a good education system.
It’s not always easy to be negative about your product as a business person but truth be told making the users to be glued to using tiktok for longer periods of time is one of their main goals as a company
Very insightful. We need to acknowledge there’s good and bad in most of the things. Its up to the user to regulate, companies like TikTok can only set guidelines
Great questions from Chris, I wish they had more time. Shou seemed very very careful and often too evasive in his answers.
I don’t have TikTok, I waste too much time on screens as it is. But I hope we find ways to make these things (social media, AIs etc) better for us as humanity rather than for few people’s wallets.
he really is a really likable CEO, not avoiding questions, and explaining everything with simple examples.
I think what to rethink is the definition of creativity and joy. The content is the key, algorithms are less important. Personally I am cautious about indirect information. It is less relevant to my life, it is much harder to tell its authenticity. No matter how it is tailored for entertainment or tutoring , the information quality degrades because of the fewer degrees of freedom contact between me and that piece of information.
The best quality information is from real life, the things happening in real life that has a direct interact or impact. All those media platforms are basically engineering information so-seriously using AI that asks users to pay attention and then forget.
Additionally, creation or distribution of information should be free. I don’t know how much value people’s attention is to the media platform and the advertisement industry, but eventually I believe in no-cost, feel-free, authentic and transparent information creation, distribution and feedback.
He evades certain questions but he does it with such intelligence that most people misses it.
what a sophisticated and talented person Mr Shou is, really impressed by his vast knowledges and how he explained it all in detailed way very calm and down to earth 👍
From what I understood from this video, arguably, based on the interest graphs, tiktok may need to know less about you for the recommendation algo compared to social graphs. This was such a productive session and answered all the questions that Congress refused to let Shou answer or failed to ask. Chris Anderson and Shou Chew were brilliant.
“You pulled off a kind of bipartisan consensus in US politics” – Just means that all US corporates are against tik tak and somehow tik tok hasn’t bought any senator yet
“You’re one of the most influential and powerful people in the world, whether you know it or not” – Gives “with great power comes great responsibility” vibes and kind of speaks both of the humility of Shou and how much Chris Anderson genuinely hopes Shou knows the weight of his responsibility and how much he wishes Shou well.
“It’s really great that the topic of teachers came up during the middle of an interview. Prior to this, I hadn’t been using TikTok for my lessons. As an English instructor, I am now definitely interested in providing lessons on TikTok as well.”
This is a really, really, good talk. I’m really impressed with how Chris Anderson able to ask the right questions, direct the talk, while still having a genuine conversation at the same time. Thanks for this TED!
I really appreciate the effects Chow has put on this matter and I can see the passion and the motivation he is presenting and the honesty image he has tried to build up. It must be a very tensed and suffocating situation at which he has been facing since the hearing. But to be honest, I still don’t see any critical evidence or logically rigorous points that can really persuade and to prove his points against the doubts and questions. It’s far not enough to comfort and assure the group of people with different concerns. Great CEO, barely qualified team in strategies. I think his team is not doing their job well enough to support him, they should come up with ideas and expresssions much better than this. Anyways, wish him and his team good luck on this matter.
