There has a strong response by members of the medical community to a recent TikTok I posted discussing RSV. This response surprised me and I felt the need to clarify exactly what I said and how I believe these types of discussions should take place in the future. I don’t think personal attacks have a place in any discussion about science, let alone a discussion amongst medical professionals, and I would encourage everyone to speak in comment sections the same way they speak when face to face.

I appreciate you wanting to clarify your points for those who did not understand. At the same time, there are people online who, no matter how much you clarify, will be committed to misunderstanding you and only hear what they want to hear. Please don’t let this loud but incredibly small minority dictate what amazing content you put out. ❤

I can’t believe that actual doctors are acting so childish and personally attack an amazing man like doctor Mike.

Mike is indeed a pretty boy doctor. A pretty-boy doctor who studied his ass off and is kind enough to share the knowledge every week in a fun and entertaining way with the world inspiring younger people to become as professional as he is. Don’t care about them, Mike. You’re doing great, you’re funny and you are getting admired for the hard work and care you put into everything.

Social media has made me more aware of this fact: If you have to personally attack someone to make a point, you don’t have a point.

I don’t think I would have gone back to see a doctor after 15 years without care without Dr. Mike. The care and commitment he shows in his videos made me hopeful, and luckily I found a doctor I could trust. But it started here with the encouragement to keep trying to find someone that can work with you. So, Thank you Dr. Mike for helping me become healthier.

I gotta say, if my doctor was acting as blatantly unprofessional as the ones hating on Doctor Mike. I’d be genuinely concerned

As a person that is nowhere near the medical profession, I completely understood what you were saying in that clip, and I’m shocked and saddened that a medical professional heard that same info and misunderstood it so badly. Makes me remember to always be a strong advocate for myself when seeing a doctor because every profession has dumb duds and I need not take everything they say as true if I don’t think it feels right.

Our generation of professionals in our 30s face this a lot regardless of profession field I feel. I work in education and training and it’s the same thing.

I’m upset that he’s upset. Dr. Mike is so thoughtful, logical and grounded in evidence. He deeply cares about his patients and viewers. He clearly takes his responsibilities super seriously. The internet is such an unfair place to be. I’m sorry that he caught the stiff end of that.

As a bioethicist, I highly commend you for putting this out there to all of the medical community. Medicine should not be political. This field is a professional art which, as you accurately stated, always requires civil discourse, deliberation, and practice in order to provide your patients with benevolence, Justice, autonomy, dignity, and other virtue ethics within your professional knowledge. Failure to do so tends to perpetuate the sad statistics of patient mistrust, leading to failure to use the medical profession if at all. Keep up the good work.

And you can expect they will attack again because you are so well -educated, tactful and diplomatic with your responses. You are Grade A Dr. Mike, don’t let this world dim your light! 🤗

I don’t always try to assume anyone says anything as 100% fact. I watch you because you make statements that makes me think about even my own biases and makes me do mo research, and more communication with my own doctors about my own issues. So that not only I am better informed, but my doctor is also. Since the human body is complicated and usually never a 1 + 1 =2 situation. It is multi-faceted, as is life. Thank you for continuing with this, and I do appreciate your channel.

I’ve been a medical journalist for 25 years, on staff and as a freelancer, writing for both patients and clinicians. It’s extremely disappointing when I think I’ve found a great subject matter expert to interview, I look at their social media, and I see that kind of churlish, ego-driven behavior. It makes me look for other sources with the same level of knowledge who either don’t have social media or whose behavior on social media is professional. I will not risk the reputation of any publication or website that I write for by including sources who behave that way. Likewise, I will not ruin my own reputation by interviewing someone like that and then getting a call from an editor who tells me that the person has been fired, booted from their professional association, disinvited as a speaker, etc. because of what they said on social media. The irony is that a lot of the people who behave that way do it to draw attention to themselves and would love to get some publicity in the press. Well, they won’t get it from me.

Mike, as an Anaesthesiologist myself, there will always be other healthcare professionals out there trying to put you down. Always remember you are a net positive in this world with the content you put out. Much love from the UK and keep doing what you do.

He seems honestly hurt by this. Makes me respect him more, actually, as it means that he definitely cares the most about being a doctor.

I cannot believe anybody would want to attack this man. Not a child, a man, a woman, or any other person in the world is viewed in my eyes as someone who would want to say anything that disheartens Dr. Mike. We love you, blocking people is alright, if someone professional starts acting unprofessional, you’re in the right, not them. We love your content, your personality, your professionalism, your kindness, and we see all your evidence (almost as much as we see your videos 😀) We are here to support you, there is a *reason* you have over 10 Million subscribers!!!

One reason i like Doctor Mike is because of no judgment and willingness to talk and have conversations. The world needs less trying to be right or avoidance of being wrong, and jumping to conclusions. Asking questions and listening is important. Everyone would be more happy

Sorry you have to explain yourself. At first I thought ypu didn’t need to, but I see your more trying to send a message.

Hope it doesn’t discourage the channel. The positivity of the channel highly outweighs the made up negativity. We can only be on the offense with positivity rather than be on the defense of negativity

I find it sick and upsetting that actual doctors have to hate on somebody for trying to make Said doctors lives easier by spreading awareness on these kinds of situations so that parents and even younger people are informed. Stay strong Mike ❤❤

As a nurse, I can only imagine what it must be like to be attacked in such a disgraceful way. There is nothing I take more pride in than the care I provide for my patients. It’s the one thing that I can’t stand to have questioned, because it cuts me to my core. As much as we may joke, our love of medicine and helping people is central to who we are. And that’s exactly why I’d be too scared to ever start a medical YouTube channel.

Particularly in medicine, where we have to be confident without being overconfident, I can’t imagine how debilitating it would be in my practice to have multiple people in my profession questioning my core values, and in such a vicious way. None of us are perfect, and especially in this world of short edits and accusatorial mindsets (particularly in medicine), you aren’t ever given the benefit of the doubt. It’s like people will take any opportunity to tear you down.

What a sad world we live in, where a bunch of healthcare ‘professionals’ would congregate online to troll another doctor, going so far as to say he’s killing children. I mean honestly, that is a despicable thing to say to any person, much less one who cares for children, unless it’s true. And clearly Dr.Mike does not have a mean bone in his body.

In fact, Dr.Mike encourages children through his online presence to be aware and even interested in their health and well-being. Some of them, I’m sure, then become interested in working in healthcare themselves. So if anyone is doing a disservice to the public, it’s the crock of rot being shilled out by those twitter trolls.

Doctor Mike doesn’t try to sell us anything. That alone is evidence that it’s not about anything other than spreading awareness and love. And that, Dr.Mike, is why I think they’re coming for you. They come from the old-world of medicine, where information is a privilege and not a right, where patients are to be told and not taught, where medicine is exclusive, and where doctors should be stodgy and cold, and definitely not fun or silly or (god forbid) attractive.

I know in my heart how hard this is for you Doctor, but please, please try to let it go. They aren’t worth it. You have more good in the palm of your hand than they have in their whole body.

Edit: for clarity and because I’m a perfectionist who just can’t help it

Hi Dr Mike.

I graduated as a Doctor from China and I’m now about to write my board exams in SA, I can tell you for sure that I have learnt so much from you in general from all of the content that you put up…

Please don’t be put down by “people” who hide behind social media, they’re just waiting for a reaction so they can make content about you, I guess the Hippocratic Oath means nothing to the doctors who critsize you because we are all in this together as health care professionals.

Keep doing what you do, you are amazing 👌

Yeah he is a pretty boy doctor; but he’s also genuine, caring, knowledgeable, and empathetic, which most doctors today seem to forget it’s important when it comes to treating patients. Love ya Dr. Mike.

As a 3rd year med student, whenever im feeling burnt out I just watch one of your videos because you manage to be both fun and focus on evidence based sience, while medical community tends to spend time hating on each other instead of supporting one another. You are a true inspiration and a role model

Their personal attacks say only about their own anger and envy. There are lots of videos in which you post about your own insecurities about your looks (which my shock these people), and also the beautiful relationship you have with your family. You have built a large fanbase due to your empathy as a physician and human being. Keep on going, doc!

Doctor Mike, I can’t even begin to try to express how much your videos mean to me as a Fibromyalgia patient. And this one makes it even more apparent to me. I’m literally sitting here, holding back tears. I’ve been personally attacked by doctors and nurses so many times since I was 10 years old due to being misunderstood, it literally caused depression and anxiety. I avoid doctors unless I feel like I’m dying because of it. You give me hope that not all doctors are like that. Thank you. It upsets me that these doctors and even general people were attacking you for spreading truth instead of misinformation because I know, from watching your videos and even taking the lessons you have given us to my own doctors, that you are trying your best to fight off false information.

I’m so sorry this happened. There is absolutely nothing wrong with blocking someone that disrespected you and you shouldn’t be made to feel bad for doing that. Science is ever-changing and improving and sharing various theories is so vital to medical transparency with the public. You did what many refuse to do. Thank you ❤

The fact that you are able to keep up with updates in the field of medicine makes, you in my opinion, better than most doctors I’ve met in my life who refuse to change their stance on anything they learned in med school, even if it was 10+ years ago.

Unfortunately, medical professionals are still people, which means inevitably there will be shitty people who have a medical degree. Your theory makes perfect sense and you were very clear. The person probably posted it on purpose to get attention since they fed off it making content and such.

Moving on and ignoring these people is the really the only thing we can do. Keep up the good work.
