Honestly it seems like that would be for the best, let alone the admitted surveillance the app is doing on behalf of China, the clear possibility and likelihood of them using the app for social engineering is dangerous as well.

Honestly I feel like this is a step in the right direction. Not just for data theft, but for our generation as a whole. Tiktok being banned will be a net positive for society.

We’re pretty late on something we should’ve done a looong time ago. Many other countries that were smart already banned Tik Tok, and we’re just getting to it now.

The greatest steps we can take towards progressing the improvement of society’s mental health in general is by banning Tiktok

… Also Twitter

I’m glad that the government is doing the right thing for now. Some TikTokers would be pissed off because of this.

The information issue is creepy as shit, but let’s be real, TikTok exposed the fragility of the human mind. Look what it’s done to so many people on a psychological level.

I agree with the sentiment that no service should be banned however, all of this data on US users in the hands of China seems like a worse alternative than allowing people to use that service. I feel like saying all other social media apps collect your data, isn’t a fair comparison, because this data is pretty much open game for China from my understanding. And given how abhorrent the CCP is, and how dangerous China is becoming, I think its a really bad idea to have this data available to them. I can’t help but feel like this angle was too neglected in the video.

Here’s an example that more Americans may be scared by:
What if health insurance providers buy your data then base your rates off of it?
You talk about being accident prone on social media, and your premiums go up.

Hope you see this Muta:

Might want to change your mic guard, you might have spilt something but if not, it could be bacterial growth. Breathing near your own lil growth isn’t too harmful for yourself (more harmful if anyone else shares it, but then their addition is also worse for you), but it can cause bad breath, sore throat, phlegm, weaker voice… you get the idea

If you’re paying attention to world affairs as a whole, you’d realize theres a reason why this spyware was being used the way it was. At this point I have no problem with ppl calling me crazy because the reality is becoming clearer as things escalate.

About time. I’ve seen too many dumb challenges originating from there that harms many of its users and the public. I know the partakers are to blame, and not technically the app, but it’s definitely the app’s influence that tends to make situations worse.

Seems weird that they tried to ban it once a while ago, then it fell through, and now they’re trying again. Something tells me this won’t go down well without a fight, given the insane amount of revenue TikTok is able to pull in.

Here is a fun idea: Why not make operating systems so apps can’t spy on you?

Then ban any sale of hardware that doesn’t come preisntalled with that capability, unless it shows a massive ugly “contains spyware” warning on the box.

“You wanna ban Tik Tok? You may as well ban Facebook and other social media.”
Your terms are acceptable.

Slapping a warning on these kind of things never works tbh Especially when the primary userbase are kids. They don’t care. And no amount of trying to make them care is going to work.

Normally I’m against TikTok but when the US government wants to ban something there’s usually more to it than what’s on the surface.

i dont think tiktok should be banned for its spying. but, it should DEFINITELY be banned for the psychological damage it has on people.

The less the government intervenes in things that aren’t about nation security, the better. If they fixed the data collection problem that’d be great but banning media sharing platforms is not going to fix it

What most people forget is that it’s not only about the stealing of data, it’s the mental harm TikTok can and has caused to users.

If anything, the data collection streamlined into every device ever created should be the thing banned due to “national security risk”. Never would have had to deal with this TikTok situation if we had actual control over our livelihood online.

Nah, I gotta disagree. It’s not just a privacy concern, there’s the entirety of the psychological damage it inflicts. It’s basically the tech-induced ADHD/ADD’s nightmare of losing executive brain function. It’s a wonder that no psychologist has given a TED talk about how destructive it is. You mentioned smoking, and I think it’s valid as an analogy except that smoking is social media use in general, and TikTok is more like “Minty Mountain Unicorn Cum-Berry Sunshine Blast Ice” flavored cigs/vapes that *are* seeing restrictions/bans. Though the policy may not be as effective as one might hope, a restriction on one thing does not necessitate that all of it goes down the drain. So I don’t see a problem with TikTok, specifically, getting the boot
