Truly Painful TikTok Gym Advice

tiktok!!

I’m fighting iDubbbz in my professional boxing debut Saturday May 14th! Tickets for the in person event and stream here: https://thecreatorclash.com/

I love going to the gym, getting a good workout, and taking care of my body. I strongly recommend exercise to all of my patients as well. That being said, sometimes things in the gym can get a little… weird. Today we take a look at some of the wildest TikToks that take place in the gym. Specifically we talk about bench press, squat, weird exercises on gym machines, hyper flexibility, racking your weights, warm ups, cool downs, PR’s, max sets, clean and jerk, resistance bands, snowboarding, pink eye, dunking, vasoconstriction, dead lifting, sprained ankles, bulking, energy drinks, treadmills, and bears.

I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

As a doctor, I’ve seen some things. But one of the MOST uncomfortable videos I’ve seen is the bilateral biceps tendon rupture from a super heavy bench press. Like, you could SEE BOTH BICEPS TEARING IN REAL TIME. 🤮

Thank you for being such a good service (as a doctor) to your community, while entertaining us who don’t want to get out of bed😁

Oh my god the guy who couldn’t lift the weights and got it stuck on his neck was so terrifying. That’s literally my worst fear 😖

I had a vasovagal response a few months ago, while I was lifting my heart rate was normal, around 130-150, and then I felt super lightheaded. I went to check my watch afterwards and it went from 150 STRAIGHT DOWN to like 50 which is lower than even my resting heart rate lol it was pretty scary before I knew what it was

I’m a relatively new fan and going through an extremely difficult time. Your videos make me laugh when I didn’t think I even had it in me to smile.

As a medical coding student, I’ve decided to go with outpatient coding which I previously thought would be boring and mundane but thanks to you I see there will be tons of variety.

Thanks for everything!

Just want to say dude, your videos have well and truly evolved. Not just the content itself and the editing, but the way you present it. Your earliest videos (and even not-so-early, from when I started watching in late 2018) felt like I was just watching a smart doctor teach me smart things, and over time the vibe of your videos has shifted – from just watching an educational video, to making your audience feel more involved like they’re hanging out with you. Keep up the great work!

Those Monster energy drinks are rookie numbers. I once saw a guy drink 8 in a single lunch period in high school. Which is actually a little terrifying. Leading cause of heart attacks in teens.

Dr Mike is insane with his schedule. He works as a doctor and has a schedule of a full time youtuber and is still gonna wipe the floor in his boxing

The only accident I had in the gym was during a squat. I’ve only been at the gym for a year and still a
growing teen (I’m 6’2 and 18) I was hitting 5 sets and on the 3rd me and my partner go for max, 1 rep.
Mine currently is 80kgs as I tried to go higher and the weight pulled me to the floor terrifyingly sudden.
Luckily the only injuries was a sore quad and backache. *I’ll keep pushing but keep it realistic*

Since I’ve started watching Dr Mike a couple months ago, I’ve been annoying my friends by constantly repeating “Did you know the medical term for a brain freeze is Sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia?”

I hope everyone involved are safe and okay afterwards 😥

Guess the take from this is that you shouldn’t never trust TikTok, especially if your life depends on it 😂

Hiii Dr Mike and everyone else! I’m a bit confused at 5:30 of ur video.

The ankle was inverted not inverted right because in inversion injuries you can sprain the anterior talofibular ligament, not eversion.

Luv ur videos ♡

I remember when I used to go to an athletic training facility, something similar happened to me like what happened to the guy bench pressing in the beginning. I was doing 415 lbs on a box squat and I had rookies in my group. My coach said I could do that weight so I decided to go with it. My group didn’t set up the catch pins and I didn’t notice that. After a few squats, I couldn’t make it down to finish a squat and ended up folding in half (that’s what my coach called it); this wouldn’t have happened if my group had put the catch pins in. I was literally on the box, with the 415 lbs on my back and I’m leaning forward and no one helped me for the longest. My coach told me that if it wasn’t for my very flexible back, I would either be paralyzed or dead rn.

As a soldier that has lost three buddies to early heart-attacks from their excessive energy drink intake, I am very worried for that young woman. Please limit yourself to one per day if you absolutely think you need an energy drink to function.

I have a question from personal experience. Why is it that sometimes just jogging or doing squats one can get lightheaded and pass out so easily?? Is it not eating well enough?? I’ve always had this issue since I was little and a doctor once told my parents it was a “lack of salt” and was told to drink Gatorade without exercise. Is that accurate at all

Fun story: I once met a guy called Axel at a hospital, he had broken his shoulder and everyone thought it was hilarious. Why? I’m Swedish, “axel” means shoulder in swedish.

I would like to personally thank you for the anterior talofibular from the original video and mentioning it again here as I roll my ankles alllllll the time and knowing what this was allowed me to pinpoint how to help it heal! And it’s been really good for about 6 months now all because I learned from you what I kept damaging ☺️🥰

My former weight instructor used to say “Do it light, do it right, do it wrong never get strong” because he did not want me and others to lift more than we could handle especially when trying to impress others.

I remember being at my friend’s house and I was messing around on the treadmill. I turned up the speed super high and I can’t remember exactly what happened but I do remember my back being slammed against the wall. I was good though.
