At the turn of the year TikTok was viewed as a largely harmless social media platform that was rapidly accruing users and unsettling the likes of Facebook and Twitter.
It is rather in keeping then with what has been an unpredictable year, that the Chinese app was thrust into the spotlight during an ever-escalating trade war that has intensified right through the pandemic.
With US President Donald Trump repeatedly deriding the coronavirus as the “China virus”, perhaps it should be no surprise that he is forcing TikTok’s owners out of America.
For a while it looked as though the app would be banned in its entirety but now a deal with Microsoft looks imminent.
