Hi friends! SO today we are talking about tiktok and why I feel the teens and kids who are on the app need more protection. It doesn’t make sense to me that in 2020 we still have no laws put into place to protect teens and kids who work on social media. TikTok in general has so many strange rabbit holes that really make me worry about society as a whole.
tik tok has gotten horrible. it’s filled with misogynistic, racist and homophobic teenage boys who think making bigoted comments is “edgy and dark humour”. that’s literally all i see on that app nowadays, and it’s so incredibly concerning.
Also, if you want another example of a bunch of teenagers, from preteen to YA, running loose on a platform with no true rules or a moderator, check out Quotev.

I was one of those teens on Quotev. There are almost no boundaries. Rabbit holes, teenage sexuality and morbid things run wild on there.
Quotev? More like Lord of the Flies.
Does TikTok still sell their data? I worry about that, which is why I haven’t downloaded it.
As someone who works in the early childhood sector I have never had such hatred for an app in my life. The horrors I’ve had to face and discuss with parents who don’t educate themselves on things there children have access too.
You may be crazy(I can’t claim to be sane), but I agree. Kids need to be protected. I check everything my kid does and she gives approval before I post anything with her, but I know that’s not the case for all kids.
A whole app dedicated to teens is problematic. You need to be 18 for most Social media but Tik Tok is for teens and it seems toxic
My biggest gripe with tiktok and how self conscious everything makes everyone- so many popular creators talk about developing eating disorders cause they’re in the public eye but so many of there fans talk about developing one cause they don’t look exactly like them- it’s a dangerous loop that is only gonna hurt people
My issue with Charlie is that she perpetuated a social media trend of typically white creators stealing content from black creators, doing it mediocre (let’s keep it real) and reaping the benefits that should’ve gone to that black original creator. But aside from that, this video is very important! Predators are definitely using the internet to try and victimize children.
omg PLEASE look into the Hype House. It’s like the Team 10 house, but with even younger kids somehow. How can this be legal? I watched a video by “Def Noodles” where he shows some footage posted online of Dixie saying “I hadn’t posted for like, a week, and (the guy who runs the house) literally told me I couldn’t eat until I posted something.” UMMMM WTF? Team 10 is bad enough, but atleast they’re all 18+. This ex-Team-10 guy who runs the Hype House has literal 15-year-olds in it???
when people say “think about the children!” in discussions of social media, this is what i want it to be about. I can’t imagine having that many strangers watching videos of me at age 15
There is one more girl who has more followers than Charlie her name is Loren. She went through what Charlie went though but back when it was musically. Its sad how it happens to anyone who gets famous
When I was 9 I was a “vlogger” (I didn’t know that word at the time but that basically what it was) and I would make videos nightly where I talked to my iPad camera about all the things going on in my life. I’m so grateful that I never had a social media to post those videos on. I refuse to show them to anyone and I can’t imagine the possibility of having thousands of people see me and judge me for them
I can’t imagine growing up with the kind of social media that exists for teens now.
Facebook wasn’t even a thing until I was in college.. the pressure seems un real and yeah, I agree about the dark side of all of this. Not enough people are having that conversation so good on you 👌🏻
It bothers me so much seeing underage girls being sexualized on tiktok… when I was young I made some stupid mistakes like these girls are right now and I regret what I did so much. I don’t want these girls to make the same mistakes I did.
i’m 14 years old and i totally agree with everything you said. tiktok is an extremely toxic platform. it’s racist, misogynistic, homophobic, etc and it scares me. making fun of girls for everything they do is normalized, making fun of “ghetto” people is normalized, pretending to be gay to go to sleepovers with girls is normalized. i see young people i know make terrible decisions on what content to post. i worry for charli, i think she’s a good kid but i’m worried about the hate and pressure she has. i loved your video, i was afraid but the title that you’d shit on tiktok as an app in general but i think your critiques were justified. i’ve been a fan for a long time, keep on making your amazing content 🙂
11:07-11:18 my thoughts immediately went to the olsen twins. those poor girls were so mistreated by every single adult in their lives. no child should ever be exploited and abused like that.
I’m so glad social media didn’t exist when I was a kid. We just had to worry about chatrooms.
I’m student teaching right now, so I’m in a high school all day every day. These kids are talking about what they’re doing to try to get TikTok famous, and I worry about them. They don’t get that something as simple as wearing a school shirt in a public video could put them in danger.
