The first thing I thought when I saw Safiyas video was “this would make a great style theory” I’m so glad you made this!

I think that this channel is a perfect opportunity to do a collab with Safiya considering how much research she has done into the history of fashion.

Honest review of the survey, I think that the background had a significant factor in choosing colors (ones with high contrast backgrounds and muted colors were wholly better than muted colors and backgrounds, vive versa). Whereas when the backgrounds were similar, I was more inclined to choose the clothes that matched with the person.

I just finished answering the survey. What surprised me the most is how the littlest change in the colour of the clothing or the background made some models look happier than their counterparts with colour being the only difference. Some models even looked gloomy and sick. Did anyone else notice this? Or just me?

I love all of your content MatPat across all four channels. Keep up the amazing work and never stop theorizing.

I feel like my survey answers were more so influenced by which colours I prefer personally than what I thought looked better on that specific person😅

Important components to not forget about are subjective taste, lighting and cultural/ceremonial clothing. If you like to match colours, fabrics or whatever a certain way, don’t let any internet skin tone colour matching test stop you from dressing the way you want to. If the test gives you a result that only goes for a certain kind of lighting, in another lighting both you and the clothes will look very different so perhaps we shouldn’t obsess about colour matching too much and just go for clothes that could work in a large range of situations. If you are in a situation where the colours are limited or already predetermined for a cultural occasion or because the garment is cultural and only comes in a few colours then the test results can be thrown in the bin since you don’t have much of a choice. Examples where the options of colours are restricted (not saying you can’t break the norm just that most won’t so if the test doesn’t matter here why should it matter when we can choose more freely): Funeral – black everything, wedding – white brides gown and bridesmaids have matching colour to each other but not white, many religious, tribal and folk dresses and clothing have a very specific colour or exact combination of colours and patterns.

That color survey had so many options I had decision fatigue by the end. It really forced me to go with my gut interpretation

Survey done, and I see what y’all were trying to do on the last page. Visual fatigue was kicking in, but also, the differences were starting to be more subtle.

I just took the survey, and first *was the background color changes intentional because it definitely skewed my results*.

Second, I was taking it next to my mom and it was actually very enlightening. She and I have often disagreed on what clothes do and don’t flatter me (and she’s not great at explaining herself) but one of the prompts revealed that she dislikes the presence of yellow in the skin tone, so she avoids colors that accentuate it. I’ve always thought gold colors in the skin are beautiful, so I wouldn’t mind clothes that bring out the yellow in my skin, but my mother revealed that her history in Medicine makes her find any yellow in the skin as ill looking

If you’re not sure what to pick in the survey, move your eyes in the middle and whichever one looks more focused is the one your eyes are drawn to. This works for me, might work for some of you.

So, I mentioned the whole color analysis trend I’ve noticed on YouTube to my mom. She laughed and dug out a paperfolder with fabric samples and color codes where some were circled as her colors. It was from the 80’s.
Funny how things moves in circles with fashion (among other things)

I took the color matching survey and noticed my own trend, I’m a big fan of darkish oversaturated colors 😂

The survey is so impressive, same images, subtle changes, makes your perspective and interpretation totally different. Well done!

Last year I went to a professional stylist and got Deep Autumn for me. I always hated mustard and brown clothes so it’s super weird for me to pick up that “ugly shirt” put it on and look at myself like “Wow, I look great!”

I am very happy to see it in this channel! It’s not a topic for women only, it’s for everybody who wants to look better!
I’ll definetely take your survey, MatPat! I’m really excited and curious for its outcome 🙂

I think that next to the “What’s your favorite color?” question the questionnaire needs a “Do you have a color your hate irrationally?” Cause I honestly feel like that affects the results even more than your favorite color

I felt like I was starting to go cross eyed by the end of that survey! Props to the theorist team for making sure they cover EVERY combination of shirt colors and backgrounds! Gotta be thorough when it comes to data collection

This is now my favorite channels on YouTube! My little sister is about two years old and asked me every day to see “MaPa” and it warms me up inside to know that this will be around for her to see when she’s old enough! I just know that your going to be popping fresh, new theories then to! Thank you for all you do. you inspire me and her every day to wonder the What-ifs and learn about the silliest of things! So thank you for inspiring my generation, I know you will inspire many more young, curious minds long after the end of these channels too. Signing off, one brother a tiny theorist in the making.❤

I remember seeing a therapist when I was younger (in the late 90s/early 00s). I was a very emo teen with goth fashion preference. she made me read the season color book and demanded I figure out my colors and try them. Oh, did I mention I’m color blind.

I would definitely be curious about (dermatologist tested 😂) theories around skincare such as the vampire facial or Korean 11 step routines on this channel!

when I started studying and taking Nutrition and Food Science seriously, Food Theory comes out. When I got more self-conscious of what I wear and how I look, Style Theory makes an entrance. Thanks MatPat.

honestly, as someone who’s recently started to dress more nonbinary, it feels like i have to start understanding clothing from scratch lmao so I’m really looking forward to learning the basics on this channel 😀

I’ve actually had my ADHD turn this arm of fashion into a hyperfixation for like the last year, and I am BEYOND PLEASED to see MatPat cover this. Excellent content.

“I guess I just lucked my way into it”….
I feel like Stephanie had more than a hand in that. Lol

But in all seriousness:
I have never seen a breakdown like this before in regards to my skin.
Thank you Style Theory.

There’s a whole other set of undertones that’s missing: Olive!! Olive undertones tend more green/less pinky and don’t really fall into strictly warm, neutral, or cool, because there’s just too much red in all of them. There are warmer/cooler/neutral olives, but just going by warm/neutral/cool when doing something like looking for foundation for example will make finding an accurate match basically impossible for someone with olive undertones (speaking from experience lol). It also affects what colors look best on you similarly to the other three main undertones!! (For example, olivey-greens and purples are colors that make me feel extra nice because they compliment the green in my skin!)
