Damn Luis, you actually changed my mind! TL;DW – creating a legal framework to restrict a free and open internet is bad, but the government being able to ban any individual company or service without doing the same to others involved in the same behavior is worse.

Strong Patriot Act vibes. I loathe tiktok and will quite literally never be compelled to use it by any force in heaven, earth or hell. But I’m incredibly wary of this “camel nose in the tent door” style of over-legislation.
I love it how Louis’s channel got from “how to fix computers” to “how to fix society and humanity in tech area”. There are a few technophilosophical people I know. All of them are unique. I am happy that the we have the Louis Rossmann.
Yeah, you’re right that we’ve normalised being spied on. Even as a kid I kind of knew about it with Google and similar services, but ignore it anyways. After all, what option did I have?
But even in an ideal world where spying wasn’t normal/accepted, the problem is TikTok is too addictive that people just won’t stop using it on their own, even if verbally told to stop, which is why I feel *some kind of* intervention is needed by authorities. Its like drugs. Some of them are illegal, some of them are legal but have requirements (Eg age on cigarettes) and some of them are legal with no strings attached.
I don’t really like the restrict act for the reasons you mentioned, it does overreach. The kind of legal framework you mentioned as an alternative would be great, but I don’t see it happening…

I have avoided most social media things, I used to have 1-2 social media profiles in the past a long time ago but deleted them a long time ago. Even with them I didn’t post private stuff or anything just mainly some funny pics or chatted with some friends at most. I knew to avoid tik tok as soon as it came out cause it was just like instagram or twitter which I also avoided for how bad they were. Tik Tok is worse in my opinion cause of certain practices but I will admit lots of social media platforms collect info on people to sell etc. But I believe tik tok goes even further with accessing even more personal stuff than other ones.
Even with youtube I limit what I put out there. I was planning on doing a bunch of videos in the past but seeing how bad youtube is for content creators countless times it put me off from it. But it’s clear it also collects info etc.
The main problem is SOO many people have social media profiles and don’t care they are being spied on claiming stupid stuff like “I have nothing to hide” etc. Until lots of people quit using social media it isn’t gonna really change.
I’ve always respected the work you do and always recommended your content to everyone I know. I truly appreciate that you are willing to educate the people about this.

Honestly, my bigger issue with TikTok is what it’s doing to people, especially children and teens, regarding their attention span. And then users double-down and make every TikTok or other short form video have a second clip in the bottom half of the screen to retain people’s attention. When you think about it, it is really concerning.
This isn’t like when our parents said videogames will rot our brain; this is genuinely bad.
