Im Canadian and Im very happy with our new TikTok ban here in Canada. Its not a public ban but a ban for all government and government related devices.
My only issue is that,Tik Tok was created in China, yet it’s banned in China. You have to brainstorm this through to some degree..The rest of the world is at Tik Tok disposal, except for the origin of the app🤔🤔
America does need to have laws in place to protect your privacy, Tik Tok is just a drop in the bucket of potential issues.
Call me crazy but I’m just as concerned about Republicans removing one of the few social media platforms they don’t control as I am about the Chinese having some control over it.
I like your guys’ nuanced take (as usual). The way the law in America works is that when you have national security concerns, you have to weigh them against the other concerns- free speech, right to no unreasonable search and seizure, yes, even the right to bear arms.
As Cenk said, 150 million Americans use Tiktok to express their free speech. That is one of the largest possible free speech concerns. So the national security concern can’t be like, “it’s causing parking tickets to increase”.
Right now, I have never seen ANY indication that Tiktok is of any national security concern. Other than vague musings by Facebook that data “could be used” badly. That isn’t going to cut it.
But then again, we have the most conservative Supreme court in 70 years, so maybe the first and fourth amendments just don’t matter at all anymore.
Solid points all around 💯
I can go along with banning TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, et al on government phones. But on personal phones of regular citizens is going a bit far.
I love how they didn’t mention the platform they are using gathering information, and monitoring people.
It probably is time to start having a much wider debate about data collection, accross all of social media.
The scariest part of this is the fact that they would be able to implement the ban. This means that the internet infrastructure in America is controlled on the level of a country like China if this is even possible, or that level of control would be implemented, which we can probably assume it already has.
“You can’t use tiktok because it’s Chinese” is one step away from “You can only use American social media” which is just a pirouette from “You can only use the American intranet” WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT CHINA DOES. The irony, it burns.
In France we have a saying about “free service” created with the rise of Internet, social media and phone apps; it rhymes in French, hence the “catchiness” and why it stuck, and sadly the translation in English loses that kick, but here it goes : “Si c’est gratuit, c’est toi le produit”, or “If it is free, you are the product”. There might be the equivalent in English, but I am not aware of it…
Either regulate all social media and data collection, or don’t. You can’t pick and choose who steals your data and sells it.
It is not a free speech issue. No one is limiting anyone’s speech. We just want to make sure that where one says it is not a security concern.
U can only blame tiktok for not being a american app…thats the only crime.. then tiktok is the best
If we are using something for “free”, that means WE are the product
Let’s not act like everybody hasn’t been spying on everybody else for decades.
Trying to ban TikTok alone for something ALL social media platforms do is idiotic.
If they want to REALLY do something, then implement data collection regulations, like Europe has done. Only specific data can be collected by platforms, and there’s strict laws and oversight on what can be shared.
There IS something the government can and SHOULD do to stop TikTok concerns…
BAN ALL DATA SCRAPING! Make public forums PUBLIC, not corporate!
As an IT professional, I agree with AOC. I don’t think the problem is necessarily social media apps and TikTok — but rather the general (lack of) protection of personal data whether it goes to China or any other mega-corporation. This applies to Meta/Facebook or Twitter and other data collectors/trackers.
So if any laws are written, it shouldn’t be to ban TikTok — but rather protect the data of citizens.
Haven’t watch the entirety of her response and I had critical comment about TikTok in the other video….
I agree with her that we shouldn’t ban TikTok and instead congress should regulate accordingly and ensure there is a function within the government that can conduct oversight regularly. This is a new era, new technology and new platform and our government is behind on its past due task in this which is to govern, regulate and oversight.
There a difference between tik tok in the USA and China’s TikTok version is child-friendly (under 14yrs) promoting science, educational and historical and a time limit, 40 minutes a day that isn’t offered in the U.S.
