Censorship is wrong, no matter how you phrase it. I don’t use TikTok, by choice.

What they should do is pass laws criminalizing the collection of data that ALL Social Media platforms collect from users. Things like your contacts, web pages you visit, your biometrics (if you have a fit watch, for instsnce).

These things are none of their business.

Yes, both things are in fact correct. The best part about not being subject to binary purity tests is the ability to see that two different ideas can in fact be true at the same time.

If the data is already up for grabs then what’s the use of bannig an app that so many people like?

“One of the reasons TikTok is exceptional is because they’re not subject to US control..” – They are though. TikTok is entirely subject to EU laws and GDPR data regulations in Europe. Just introduce GDPR or better data regulation in US too.

I would argue that the solution is stricter data protection laws, which every social media app should respect. What private data is collected and shared should be fully under the control of users.

Krystal doesn’t want Tiktok banned because that’s where Kyle gets all his haircut ideas from.

I get about 20 junk phone calls a day. Sometimes I ask them, “Where did you get my name from?” The most common answer is, “Experian.” I’ve called these credit reporting companies in the past and told them that I don’t want them to disclose any of my information without my specific permission. They still keep coming. This has been going on for years, consumer activists have complained about it, and Congress refuses to do anything significant about it. I assume that’s because the credit reporting companies, as part of the financial industry, are paying them off with (legal) financial contributions. (Biden has always been one of the main beneficiaries.)

So I don’t believe this national security argument. If the Chinese wanted this data, they could buy it from Experian.

Tiktok is important bc they’re the only reason data privacy and data collection comes up. With Tiktok gone META and Google have free roam as usual. This should be the best opportunity to pass legislation, not target one company bc the government cant control its data

Almost everyone on the congressional committee is HEAVILY invested in TikTok’s competitors (Meta) and yet you didn’t mention that here.

2:02 @Saagar THANK YOU! As a lefty this diagolue has been pissing me off and you explained so well! Now this being said I don’t think we should ban it rather just do a force sell! This isn’t hard

Is there a good source that illustrates the major risk factors involved with Chinese data collection? I’ve heard a few things about the terms of service and potentially having access to other nearby devices or something like that. I don’t use Tik tok but I think if people are informed then they have the decision to subject themselves to risk or delete the app. The government doesn’t need to do what we can do for ourselves.

This was fantastic from both sides. I typically lean much more to the right when it comes to politics. But I agree 100% with Krystal in this. TicTok is only an issue, because the US is not currently benefitting from their data collection.

that’s a first saagar, i hadn’t heard anyone say the tiktok ceo performed poorly.

I’d only heard how embarrassing our congress was.

Banning TikTok is the strategy of META and company. They want their competition targeted while avoiding any binding regulations on them.

It’s disingenuous for lawmakers or political figures to use data privacy as an excuse when they have NO interest in incorporating any data privacy laws…

It’s right there in the Privacy policy if anyone wants to see it for themselves. “TikTok may transmit your data to its servers or data centers outside of the United States for storage and/or processing. Other entities with whom TikTok may share your data as described herein may be located outside of the United States.” The data collected includes “Keystroke patterns and rhythms” “We may collect biometric identifiers and biometric information as defined under U.S. laws, such as faceprints and voiceprints, from your User Content.” “We retain information for as long as necessary to provide the Platform and for the other purposes set out in this Privacy Policy.” If you don’t like it don’t use it, just shows that 150 million people don’t give a fuck about privacy.

Damn Krystal! I went into this with the opposite conclusion and you had some great arguments. I love when that happens

How does Krystal make a statement like “Meta collects way more data than TikTok does” … as I understand it we don’t know how much data either collect, but we do know that TikTok has a history of going to data in your phone that you have not approved in comparison to Facebook’s apps. Also the rate of data coming out of the TikTok app is higher which implies it is collecting more data.

If Krystal thinks all this data is for sale already, she has no idea what the data they’re collecting is nor does she have any understanding how it can be used once we have the computational power to crunch it. Not even a TikTok specific point. It’s not just PII, it’s mass behavioral data linked to PII.

I used to think banning TikTok should be the way to go but Krystal finished changing my mind. I do think there should be more legislation on data privacy. Also – the moment the congressional hearings ended TikTok pushed every 1 of 3 videos pro TikTok arguments and bashing congress.

The major issue with TikTok isn’t just the data harvesting, it’s psychological influence it has on the youth of the population. With that influence comes the ability to put it lightly, disrupt and shape society as a whole. What Saager said about why china doesn’t allow western social media into the country because they are weary of possible “psy-op” campaigns is ironic. The reason why they are weary of it is because they are doing it. The evidence that proves this is what people keep bringing up, why is the content on the app so drastically different in china than in the west??
