TikTok CEO appears for the first time before Congress- 3/23 (FULL LIVE STREAM)

tiktok!!

Join Washington Post reporters as TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testifies before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The hearing comes as the Biden administration increases pressure on TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell off the video-sharing platform. In his first appearance before Congress, the TikTok CEO is expected to face questions about the company’s links to China and potential online harms to young people.

TikTok has seen a meteoric rise in popularity over the seven years since its inception, becoming the most downloaded app in the United States in 2022. Critics argue that TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, makes the app a national security threat, potentially allowing it to share data about its American users or steer its algorithms at Beijing’s behest.

Libby Casey will anchor live coverage, along with James Hohmann, in The Post’s newsroom. Rhonda Colvin will be live on Capitol Hill, and Post technology columnists Geoffrey Fowler and Taylor Lorenz will provide insight and analysis. Read more: https://wapo.st/3yVIlQR. It’s actually terrifying how out of touch our leaders are from technology. Maybe people should be leading us that did not get their most recent degree on typewriters. We cannot possibly have any confidence in the laws these people pass with regards to any tech.

It’s impressive how well organised and reflected Chew’s answers are, even after hours of aggressive questioning. But it’s shocking how unprofessional, biased and hostile the congress is. I see the hazards imposed by tiktok and I am definitely concerned about the future of the generation using this platform unlimited and we definitely need to talk about it. Also it is possible that the CPP has a stake in it. No doubt, the U.S. and any other country using Tiktok has a problem. But as it seems the congress lacks evidence and even more so they lack expertise in the field of technology, which is probably the fundamental problem why they act so ridiculously. Overall, to me it seems that Chew is a business man trying to maximize profits while being under pressure from both the US and China, but he seems eager to find a solution and strike a deal. The congress on the other hand… it seems they try to make a case for shutting down tiktok without any evidence and abuse their power, unfortunately from what I have heard quite typical for the US

2:08:50 is insane. TikTok’s reporting system is largely reliant on users to report content that violates the guidelines. The video they showed had like 40 likes. Almost nobody had seen it. They blew it way out of proportion.

As an American Citizen, I don’t think this conversation should have been lead by these dinosaur congressmen. This conversation should be lead by the national security agency, by real, fluent, young technology experts. From what I gathered, this is not about data collection, but about how the american government cannot control anymore the information the american population sees. Feel free to share you opinion.

One thing I will give Mr. Chew, he did a great job showing America a mirror. He basically said the algorithm is based on location. America is violent, drug ridden, full of greed and vanity. The government regulates all of the wrong things; therefore, what’s less regulated by government and what gets more traffic from those users is what is seen. So, he’s basically saying is we are showing you what you accept and choose to invest in. Can’t be mad with them for that. If you want to see change, you have to change what your government regulates and allows. 🤷🏾‍♀

They are making huge, untrue statements and claims, arguing, and dismissing his answers. This is why we need term limits on congress.

I hate how this woman at 2:08:50 brings her very aggressive claim then after she’s done they won’t let CEO Chew respond to defend himself. just goes to show that the people are biased and this case is rigged

Can someone please tell me why Congress won’t let Mr Chu actually ANSWER the questions he’s been asked? This is giving me a headache!

Is like explaining your parents how to send an email through the phone. Mr. Chew has so much patience I would lose control and ask if they know what a phone is.

I find it hard how the congress wants to prove their point so hard and pinning Mr chew to the allegations without fully wanting to hear the side views of the CEO. Very strange

This is embarrassing. These 🦖 are just mad because they can’t get $ or info, and most importantly cannot block information to the people of the country.

The stark difference in how they treated Mr. Chew vs how they treated Mr. Zuckerberg is honestly enraging. Considering the fact that, yes, the two hearings were covering different allegations against each platform, a lot of the privacy and security concerns are similar. So it’s really disheartening to see this sort of treatment and blatant disrespect directed at someone who was there to ANSWER questions and not be talked over. I almost felt like there needed to be a lawyer present to object a lot of these questions that were just leading, compound, argumentative, vague and/ or worded in a way where the CEO would HAVE to reword it in order to give an honest answer. This hearing was ridiculous on many accounts and honestly a disservice to the people who actually wanted answers on how Tiktok operates in the US.

Arrogance driven by ignorance.
Ignorance driven by arrogance.
The guy is young, knowledgeable and confident in comparison to the dinasaurs(robbers).

As an American citizen I am ashamed that our congress has such ego that they don’t even let Mr. Chew answer the questions. The chair woman is horrible about not letting him speak when the time is up because they know they would get destroyed if he could defend himself. I am severely disappointed in this country. And they keep asuming tiktok is talking to china when he states clearly he isn’t.

They could have finished this hearing within five minutes and concluded “this is a successful Chinese app, we do not approve it, period!” But instead , taking more than 4 hours so every congressmen could have a chance to read out their essays.

As a singaporean watching this, I am so proud of Mr Chew being able to tolerate this circus and remain calm with zero eye rolls. Haha! What an utterly hilarious and entertaining watch.

One of the things that annoys me the most is that throughout a lot of this hearing the congressional speakers kept referencing TikTok as having vast amounts of misinformation on the platform.. Of course there is, sites like Wikipedia have had the same issue and are far more likely to be used as a source of truth when internet users go to search for something. But what angers me the most was the vast amount of false/unconfirmed information being spewed out of their own mouths.. The people whom you would HOPE would speak facts and not just rumours.. It’s disgusting that this is what politicians do and its no wonder they get slandered non stop for being liars.

Why does congress all of a sudden wanna pretend like they care about children’s lives…what a disgrace.

As a Singaporean, I feel enraged that they treated the CEO of TikTok in that way, I feel that racism is at place now. But I’m glad that the CEO of TikTok stayed calm

I can’t believe they would be so rude and not let him answer questions he’s there for a reason not to just sit there and get talked over
Edit: wow wouldn’t even let him say anything to the family that lost a son
