Tech tip: don’t get hacked
Glad you got this sorted! You can actually disable all forms of two factor other than a security key by enrolling in the Advanced Protection Program. I’d highly recommend all YouTubers do so. There does need to be changes for this type of thing though. Even to start there could be more limited channel permissions, it would be a quick change but go a long way.
Linus was just so done, he couldn’t even spell the offer code correctly anymore.

As someone who had a channel deleted (albeit in a different way), I sympathize. Glad Google had your back and I wish they were as responsive for me (took a week, but at least they restored it).

This is why it is so important to look at security from a multifaceted approach: disaster recovery/contingency planning, implementing least privilege, session token timeouts, awareness and training, authenticator strength, security operations center ops, etc. This is incredibly difficult for a YouTube content creator because they have very little control over the platform itself, but there is still a lot an organization can do from an administrative level to help mitigate the risk of situations like this.
Getting hacked is genuinely one of the scariest things one can experience nowadays. I can only imagine how much scarier this was for you, given how massive and important this channel is. Definitely a reminder to be vigilant of phony emails, texts, etc. Glad it all got resolved 👍
I have to give mad props to the entire LTT Team. This is a serious issues and something that can be so scary. My heart sank when I saw the video title. Serious Props to Linus as well. So glad they’re back. This channel’s been my therapy for 5+ years now. Would hate to see it crumble due to YouTube’s incompetence to solve this glaring problem
As is said in the cyber security world: “The human is often the weakest link in internet security” and in this case it turned out to be true once again.
Google definitely has a LOT of work to do when it comes to security on their platforms but also on helping out people with these issues. They seem to ignore small channels completely and if you are even less than a “small channel” forget about it Google won’t ever acknowledge you. YouTubes support team is horrendous if you have less than a few million subs it seems
As someone who uses the internet alot, I have slowly started using VM’s for mostly everything I download, like .exes or .pdfs or other media like that. So my pc or other things don’t get compromised. Because what happened to you guys is one of my biggest fears of all time and not knowing how to get my platform back, even though i’m not a YouTuber or any big media guy, at all. it’s still a fear, but i’m happy you guys got everything recovered!!

Honestly I don’t really watch LTT anymore but he’s a genuinely good human being and it sucks to see this happened to him. But also the incredible amount of support he received was heartwarming. Glad he got everything back and is using this as a learning opportunity instead of pointing a finger. Upstanding
